Made in Scotland, from Girders

David of Laid Back Bikes lent Town Mouse a Paper Bicycle, and this is what she thought…

“In a handsome, dress-up city like Edinburgh it’s nice to have a bike you can ride in smart clothes without worrying about oil. And you can get it powdercoated to order almost any colour you choose so you could even match it to your favourite outfit if you wanted to really work the cycle chic vibe.”

Lovely Bicycle has just published the first part of a long term review of a single speed Paper Bicycle. Seat Stays, who needs them?

Brazing a Paper Bicycle frame

This is a video of me brazing the seat tube clamp joint on a Paper Bicycle frame. I fillet brazed this joint on the first 150 bicycles, its now welded instead. There are also close up photo’s of the fillet joint here on Flickr.

Paper Bicycle – Made in Scotland

On June 3rd a container is going to arrive at my workshop in Scotland to collect 73 Paper Bicycles destined for the far flung shores of New York. I have been inspired to document the building of these bicycles over the next three weeks by a thread on City Cycling Edinburgh titled Made in Scotland (?)

I will be posting a daily set of photos at my Flickr site detailing what has been done, along with the occasional video on You Tube.

Green on Green in Green

This is Scotland’s Green MSP Patrick Harvie riding a green Paper Bicycle across a green park, what more could a photographer wish for, he’s even smiling and its sunny.
This happy confluence of events came about thanks to Mark Kielmans recent celebration of ED’s Cycle Coop in Bishopbriggs. The coop supports and encourages people to get back into cycling, not as an end in itself but as a way to make the community a nicer happier place. I’m glad to have been able to help Mark out with Elephant trailers, and Paper Bicycles, which gives him the tools he needs to do a brilliant job.

Patrick Harvie MSP was there along with Struan Stevenson MEP and Jo Swinson MP, among many other luminaries to celebrate the success that Mark has made off ED’s Cycle Coop.

Oops is an odd way to begin, but in this case the begining salutes and end.

Last week my server smoked and on the way out the door took all my web sites with it. By luck rather than design my main sites have backups, but this blog did not, so all that it was is no more.

So 2nd time lucky, maybe this time round I will be a more regular poster.

In a perverse way I like being reminded of the mechanical, physical, nature of the internet. As an engineer its comforting to occasionally hear the grinding of metal on metal that indicates that behind all the voodoo and magic of the world wide web there is a clumsy Heath Robinson machine.
